Your first Wigan game?
Being an exiled fan living in Grimsby I’d have to go with the most recent time I saw Wigan, the 2012 Magic Weekend against St. Helens. I remember the way we absolutely tore into them that day from minute one. I went with a mate who wasn’t particularly well versed in RL and he was amazed at how well we were able to distribute the ball between the players, especially on the last tackle.Embed from Getty Images
What is your most memorable moment being a Wigan fan?
Probably the 1998 Grand Final win, just mainly because it was our first title win that I was old enough to understand. Jason Robinson’s try from the North Stand touch-line at Old Trafford will always be a personal favourite of mine.
Who is your favourite all time Wigan player?
It’s a tough one because we have had so many great ones over the years. I’d probably have to plump for Billy Whizz himself, Jason Robinson. I always used to be in awe of his sheer speed and ability to mesmerise opposition defenders. He was always dependable to get you a try when you needed one too.
Who is your favourite Wigan player?
Of the current crop I would probably go for Joe Burgess, for similar reasons to my admiration of Jason Robinson. Always reliable to get you on the score sheet and can produce moments of magic out of nothing, even when he’s having an off day. His try to take the game to extra time against Brisbane in 2015 proved that.
Name one player that you would love to see play for Wigan – past or present
I’d probably have to go for Billy Slater, in his prime I really don’t think there was a better full back in the world.
Which opposition player do you fear the most when they play Wigan?
If he had stayed in rugby league I would have chosen Denny Solomona. I never used to relish the prospect of us coming up against Richard Myler for some reason, he’s a player who is capable of dictating the play in the midfield and can always produce something special.
What is your favourite away ground and why?
As I really haven’t been to many I would probably say Headingley as it’s one that still harks back to the traditional style sporting venues.
Your top 8 prediction for this year?
My heart is telling me that we’ll go all the way and retain our title but my head is forever reminding me of how difficult it is to be the team to beat. On my RL blog page I predicted Warrington might just actually do it this year but I feel we’ll at least make the play-off semi finals.
If you could change one thing about Rugby League, what would it be?
As much as I enjoy the Super 8 format and prefer it to the convoluted ‘ClubCall’ system, I would just rather us follow the pattern of the team finishing first after X amount of games wins the league title. Bring back the Premiership for the post-season competition.
Who do you think will win the Steve Prescott Man of Steel Award this year?
I feel it will depend on how certain teams perform throughout the season, if Castleford do well I can see someone like Greg Eden or Michael Shenton taking it or if Warrington do well it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Kevin Brown could win it. With my Wigan head on though I’d love to see John Bateman win it.
