A look at the Opposition

Huddersfield have had somewhat of a revival in the past few weeks and currently sit a place above Wigan in the Super League table due to a better points difference. Rick Stone has really managed to get them firing again and perhaps mainly due to Jake Mamo. The Australian fullback has scored 12 tries in his 9 Giants appearances so far and looks to be a great buy for them. However, good news for Wigan is that Mamo picked up a knock against St Helens last week and will miss the game against Wigan on Friday. Another form player of late for Huddersfield has been Sam Rapira, however, he is also going to be missing from the Giants lineup on Friday due to suspension. Kruise Leeming is named in their squad but could also be a doubt after leaving the field early last week, against St Helens.

Recent victories against Warrington, Catalans and St Helens look to have injected confidence back into Rick Stone’s side and they now look odds on to make the Super 8’s. Managing the injury to Jake Mamo however, over the next few weeks and how they respond to the injury could perhaps be the difference between Super 8’s and Middle 8’s.

Wigan 19 Man Squad:

hudds away

Wigan make a couple of changes to their 19 man squad from the cup game against Warrington. Taulima Tautai misses the game through a minor injury, but if anyone deserves a rest – Mr T is probably due one! Callum Field comes into the squad along with Lewis Tierney who replaces Anthony Gelling. Gelling is reportedly out with a knee injury but there is no mention yet if this is just a precaution from his last injury or whether it is likely to keep him out longer than this week.

Thoughts on the Game

One win, a win by one point and there’s a confidence back. A confidence in the fans and a confidence in the players. What a difference a week makes. The return of Tomkins, Bateman et al seems to have restored positivism in regards in all things Wigan. However, Wigan have so many times taken one step forward to inevitably fall two steps back. The precarious nature of the table at the moment means that Wigan cannot afford to lose and fall two points behind Huddersfield and be languishing in 8th place.

There are potentially 13 league games for Wigan to turn this season around and the next five, the last five of the regular season are all winnable games but more importantly, they are MUST win games.

I expect Wigan to win and win big on Friday. The tables have been turned for this game with Huddersfield missing some of their star men and Wigan welcoming their’s back. Wigan need a win but I expect a good, convincing win.

Looking at the 19 man squad, my Wigan line up for Friday would be:

  1. Tomkins
  2. Davies
  3. Gildart
  4. Burgess
  5. Marshall
  6. Williams
  7. Leuluai
  8. Sutton
  9. McIlorum
  10. Nuuausala
  11. Farrell
  12. Bateman
  13. O’Loughlin

Sub. Powell

Sub. Isa

Sub. Field

Sub. Tomkins

A very strong side, again!
