Match Preview v Castleford (S8’s, R6)

Opponents: Castleford Tigers

Date: 17.09.17

Venue: DW Stadium

Tickets: https://www.eticketing.co.uk/wiganwarriors/default.aspx

A look at the Opposition

The league leaders are without Luke Gale, Ben Roberts, Jake Webster and although he is named in the 19 man squad, Zak Hardaker may not be risked, after picking up an injury last week.

Castleford face the predicament of, do they rest players, knowing that thye have semi-final in two weeks time, or do they try to ensure they have form going into that game – risking further injury. We have seen in the past, particular when teams got a week off before playoff games, that sometimes a rest a week before a big game is not always the best of things. So is it likely that Castleford use the Wigan game as their “rest game” with Hull at home next week. Who knows – and that could be a dangerous mentality for Wigan, Wigan have to win against Castleford and they need to be ready to play Castleford at their very best.

Team news

The Castleford 19 Man Squad:

From www.castigers.com

Daryl Powell has named his 19 man squad to take on Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Powell will be without a host of first team players after Friday night’s win over Leeds Rhinos with Luke Gale, Jy Hitchcox, Junior Moors, Larne Patrick and Ben Roberts missing, making way for Matt Cook, Oliver Holmes, Tom Holmes, Joel Monaghan and Jake Trueman to step back into the 19 man squad.

Speaking today Powell said: “It will be a tough game for us on Sunday, we know that, but we’re confident. We’ve been an outstanding team all year and regardless of whether we’ve got a couple of bits and pieces injury-wise we’ll go and be super competitive and look to win the game.”

Thoughts on the Game

Again, the most used phrase for Wigan fans over the past six weeks – This is a must win game.

The wins for St Helens and Hull this weekend ensures that Wigan must beat Castleford to ensure that their semi-final chances remain in their own hands.

The fact that Castleford are missing so many players and the importance of the game for Wigan, should mean a Wigan win. The circumstances of the game seemingly play into Wigan’s favour but they need to ensure that they capatalise on this opportunity. A win against Castleford will allow Wigan to know exactly what they need to achieve away at Wakefield on Saturday, with Hull and St Helens playing on Thursday and Friday.
