5 Reasons to be hopeful in 2018…

1) Injuries
Wigan have had a pretty horrific time in terms of the number of injuries picked up. 2018 cannot be as bad as 2016 or 2017 – can it? Whether it be the humiliation of the Wakefield away in 2016, when a virus struck the Wigan squad or the large run of games in 2017 in which Wigan were missing the likes of Burgess, Bateman, Gildart, McIlroum, Manfredi, Flower, Shorrocks etc etc for large parts if not all of the season.

2) Fully Fit Tomkins –
Sam Tomkins is enjoying his first full preseason since returning to Wigan. He was overlooked by Wayne Bennett for the World Cup, a full preseason for Tomkins could see him at his fittest and best in 2018

3) Evergreen O’Loughlin –
The skipper’s form last season was incredible and he was rewarded with a new one-year extension for the 2018 season. This season could be his last and what a fitting end it would be to see Lockers lifting more silverware in 2018

4) Agents Maguire and Richards
Gabe Hamlin – Unknown, untested but highly recommended by Michael Maguire and Pat Richards. The young Australian forwards adds youth and vibrancy to the Wigan pack; a lot of intrigue regarding Hamlin but when two people like Richards and Maguire recommend a player – you do not hesitate in giving them an opportunity

5) Learning from the other code
Wigan last year missed out on 106 points last year due to missed conversions and penalties. The club has moved to appoint ex-England Rugby Union player, Charlie Hodgson as a kicking consultant. Hopefully, the success ratio Wigan’s kickers will improve as a consequence.
